Professional Chat: Designers Open About Closet Doors

I recently bought a new residence, and my search was rather extensive — 74 viewings, to be precise. As I walked through all of those houses, I frequently saw something I did not like: my reflection in mirrored cupboard doors framed in gold metal.

Now mirrored doors have their place in some cases they can reflect a gorgeous view of the outside. However, in general, they’re not for me. So I got in touch and asked for a few much-needed inspiration. Here are their suggestions.

BROWN DAVIS INTERIORS, INC..

Make your mark. Todd Davis of Brown Davis Interiors sums things up perfectly with the observation that”among the ultimate luxuries is using a gorgeous master cupboard.”

These doors are in a residence which Davis and his partner, Robert Brown, made in Manalapan, Florida. The unit was gutted by them and altered the floor plan. This cupboard can be a walkway in the master bedroom to the husband’s personal office.

Their client told them she adored the”X” pattern in general, therefore Davis and Brown incorporated it into the master cupboard doors. “To supply extra texture and warmth, as well as venting for your clothing, we simply hung and stretched a neutral silk fabric behind the wooden doors and the’X,'” says Davis.

Harmonize and be happy. Rather than using conventional doors for this cupboard, designer Marie Burgos wanted to harmonize them with the shoji screens she used for the bedroom door.

“The whole idea was to maintain the area peaceful and harmonious, with a touch of Asian design, to create a true retreat that would remind the owner of his own tropical island,” she states. “I used feng shui throughout the whole residence, and the bedroom is no exception.”

Customize on a budget. “I had been challenged to outfit a rather large dressing room in this home,” says architect Mark English,”and was amazed at the price to do so with conventional closet-company systems. In the long run, we chose Ikea systems and corrected the room dimensions slightly to link to the item door sizes.”

He adds,”The hardware, hinges and glides found on the Ikea product are certainly as good as what you might find in lots of the more expensive products on the market.”

Do not let this happen to you. This is the look I am trying to prevent.

Smith & Vansant Architects PC

Match the style of your house. “For the most part, the doors we utilize for the cabinets in our endeavors match the door design being used throughout the rest of the home,” states Pi Smith of Smith & Vansant Architects. “Door design — panel design and material — relates to the general design and character of the home, so the choice of doors is a specific design decision we make on every project.”

For this particular house, Smith’s team employed four-panel doors which are typical of this early-20th-century lake cottages found in the region where the firm can be found in Vermont. Smith commented that this form of door looks nice paired with closets, particularly in this case, where they’re symmetrically written around a enjoyable dormer window.

The doors are solid, painted MDF using Emtek oil-rubbed-bronze hardware.

Get a personalized look. This is another design by Smith & Vansant. In this master bedroom, custom butternut doors make the cupboard a feature. The architects chose to not bring the doors down to the ground, rather running paneling beneath them to make this area feel more like a built in than a cupboard.

“We might have employed a row of cupboard doors onto the wall,” says Pi Smith,”but the butternut brings so much more character to the room. Even though these are doors that are new, they have a classic feel that’s beautiful with the tinted plaster walls.”

Murphy & Co.. Layout

Open the barn door. There was no fantastic way to utilize a conventional swing door in this design, therefore Jeff Murphy of Murphy & Co.. Layout chosen with this painted poplar sliding one. It shuts off the cupboard or the whole room based on its location.

“Additionally, it adds some enjoyable barn-door-style detailing, since this bedroom was to get a young girl who is an avid horse rider,” says Murphy.

Jerry Jacobs Design, Inc..

Proceed with the warmth. Here, the mirrored wall is firmly tucked over the cupboard and subtly adds to the height of the vaulted ceiling.

This residence is situated in Mexico, and the timber used for the doors is local to the Cancun region. “The rooms need to be air-conditioned throughout the year, and the upper louver section allows for air to circulate within the cupboard,” says designer Jerry Jacobs.

“Another important thing was that the break where I made a decision to halt the cupboard and create an arched niche [partially shown] using a mirror and drawers,” he adds.

Jodie Rosen Design

Conquer with comparison. Here we’ve got a contemporary twist on those classic, ugly sliding doors which I spoke about before. These are made from a combination of aluminum (for the framework ), white back-painted glass and a wood veneer.

“Rather than taking away in the distance, they really add an element of design with the contrasting paneling in material which is employed with the rest of the decor,” says designer Jodie Rosen. “It’s a great solution for a room which takes a closed door but in which there’s no room for a door swing.”

Peter McDonald Architect

Avoid conflict. This home was a reconstruct on top of an present base, and the architects were restricted by a tiny footprint. The two upstairs bedrooms were quite small as well.

“If you look to the left from the photo, you may see the door into the room from the stair hallway,” says architect Peter McDonald. “If we’d made the cupboard door swing in a more conventional manner, it would have conflicted with that door — and I despise doors which battle.”

Instead, his team used doors which slide in front of the window seat. In addition they found garage door hardware which matched the hardware that they used in the rest of the home and remained within their beach cottage theme.

Applegate Tran Interiors

Clean this up. At a bedroom which was a lacking in storage in a major way, Gioi Tran of Applegate Tran Interiors made an whole wall of cabinets. The framed frosted-glass doors have”blank lines and slip to take up more space,” Tran says.
