10 Feminine Workspaces for Hardworking Girls

My daughter graduated from eighth grade and is on to her next phase of life — high school. I was cleaning her off before we left for our much-earned vacation to the beach. I briefly read over her papers, notes and to-do lists out of courses. She worked hard this year. She’s my small “working girl,” most nights staying up later than me to examine and get her job done.

Her accomplishment got me thinking about women’s work spaces — a few offices, some only desks in an area. That is where we run the series; a modern-day mission controller. You might find yourself working late at night on homework, a blog, a grocery list, a design or just paying off the bills, so why don’t you glam it up a little? All these workspaces frequently do double duty, just like most girls I know. This piece is dedicated to all of the working women out there: moms, designers, writers, bloggers, students and everyone in between. You work hard, so that I hope these spaces will inspire ideas for your own workspaces. Keep up the good work, ladies!

What a great office! I adore the transitional style of this furniture and the colour of charcoal gray and periwinkle. See the placement of the desk with a workspace behind the desk which holds a desktop. This is a superb way to maintain unsightly wires out of sight and from a wall.

Wow, feminine glamour with a hint of old Hollywood. Not sure I’d find any work done at this desk — I would be too busy looking at the gorgeous background which continues up the wall to the ceiling. It’s a great touch; ceilings don’t need to just be white.

If patterned background on all partitions is too much for you, think about a accent wall. This entertaining pink abstract paper appears perfectly punchy with the snowy modern desk. Additionally notice the overhead storage space — high on a wall is a great place to squeeze in extra cabinets.

If you don’t have an extra space to dedicate to a workplace, think about a desk in your bedroom. This great working area is only a couple of steps in the bedroom and feels cohesive with the bedroom palette and furniture. Notice that the great abstract piece close to the desk. Abstract artwork mixed in with conventional pieces produces a great soft modern appearance.

What I really like about this space is that nothing actually matches. The palette is somewhat random, and the furniture styling is quite different, but it works. This is a genuine test of good design: choosing pieces which work in a noncontrived way. I’d love to work in this area with its ample surface area and glimmers of stone.

Have an extra cupboard anywhere? It has been my experience that most people have too much stuff. Think of whether you can clean out a closet somewhere and you might just wind up a new office nook. It does not take much, only a surface space, a few shelves and good light. This great small office area is spruced up with color and pattern on the back wall. Notice the way the door was removed and replaced with a curtain — good thought!

Blend an office room with a sitting room. Have you got a sitting area somewhere on your home where you may add a desk? There are some rooms which produce perfect sense as dual-function spaces. Notice that the great color of lavender to the comfy chair. Consider reupholstering a chair which may help define a room as “for her”

Decide on a pattern which helps set the tone as feminine. This window color with its pretty colors of plum and apple green set the palette for the entire office.

If you’ve got an extra-large space like this, consider numerous workstations. Note using mainly neutrals with touches of pink to make a mutually feminine touch. The open shelves at the background are as functional as they are pretty.

Go bold with black and white glamour. I have always felt that black and white rooms read as slightly feminine because they are whimsical and fun. Only a little touch of pink blossoms makes this desk area unmistakably modern with feminine glamour.
