World-Class View at Manhattan Condo
The New York skyline is the boldest accessory within the house. This 24th-floor high rise in the West Chelsea area of Manhattan overlooks the town’s skyline, with views stretching out over the rest of the city. Designer Drew McGukin used this opinion as a background for the client’s contemporary soul. This was the client’s first home, and starting a collection of lovely furniture has been high on her priority list. McGukin centered on timeless, quality pieces in neutral colors and extra color through wallpaper and fabric.

The boxlike structure of the apartment presented some challenges at the interior layout. Even though the stunning opinion was that the highlight of the distance, the floor plan was difficult to organize for livability. McGukin and his team expanded the existing kitchen with the addition of cabinetry and shifting out the cabinets using a darker lacquered paneling. The elongated cabinetry helps specify the kitchen and the dining area places, but the great room still feels open.
Engineered hardwood floors makes the house feel less like a condo and much more like a customized home.

Even though the majority of the furniture is impartial — designed to endure a life of interior changes — McGukin spiced things up using colorfully patterned cushions, turquoise chairs and contemporary wallpaper.
The large windows provide plenty of natural lighting, so solar shades were a must. Chandeliers, table lamps and floor lamps are layered using all the natural light.

McGukin and his group focused on layers of wallpaper and pattern for visual feel. While the perspective is the primary focus, the large-scale wallpaper print and the fireplace provide a second stage of interest and a sense of purpose.

A custom Lindsey Adelman chandelier provides the perfect midcentury modern touch to the dining area. Simple Gio Ponti chairs and a Room & Board table draw on the eye past the dining room into the magnificent view outside.

The location of the dining area lets it discuss light together with all the kitchen and the living spaces. The chandelier, ceiling lamps, kitchen task lighting and large windows create layers of lighting. Task lights, low lights and sculptural lights were inserted in key places.

McGukin installed a handy Murphy bed at the workplace wall to assist the workplace twice as a guest bedroom. Wheels on the desk, designed by McGukin, allow it to be moved easily.

“When I think of midcentury, I think of one crazy wallpaper after the second,” says McGukin. The concept of a contemporary take on the groovy grandmother was McGukin’s most important inspiration for several of the fabrics. Kravet fabric dresses up a Jonathan Adler chair at the workplace.

A trio of neutral-color silk and hemp rugs allowed McGukin to take a simple color theme throughout.

The textural grass fabric wall covering echos exactly the same sense of the wealthy carpet and the seat at the foot of the mattress. Soft blue bedding ties in the gorgeous skyline view and provides a touch of color.
